Most of my images are taken from the streets of lower Manhattan.
I think of them as icons of the ordinary. My purpose as a photographer
is to reveal the wonder and order and sacredness within the apparent
chaos of our everyday world. None of the images are manipulated
or arranged.
Each wall and image has an organic life cycle of its own: layers
of color and light appear, disappear, are altered and subsumed.
Natural processes weather these walls; so does the human hand, forming
a pentimento of culture, history, time. I like the photos to help
people see the intricate lovely detail of the world around them.
For me, city walls me are a scroll to be read, and reread.
